DescriptionCircular bronze medal with accompanying ribbon and pins in a box with blue velvet backing. Medal is attached to a red ribbon with vertical white stripes down the center. Ribbon has a pin on the back. Above this is a rectangular red pin with white vertical stripes down the center. At the very top is a gold and red enamel pin. Medal depicts the side of a person's face wearing a helmet with an eagle head at the top and feathers down the back. "Freedom" in raised lettering along the bottom with "M Berg" inscribed on the left side. Rear of medal has a raised depiction of the Liberty bell with "United States of America" in raised lettering around the perimeter.
Bio/Historical NoteIn 1946, Moe Berg was awarded this U.S. Medal of Freedom for meritorious services outside the United States, but Berg declined, cryptically stating that "I must refuse to accept and I reject the medal awarded me." After Berg passed away in 1972, Berg's sister Ethel accepted the medal on his behalf.
