DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Nellie Fox captured tagging Joe Cunningham out at second while leaping over him to avoid a collision. Fox has a wad of tobacco in his left cheek. Fox is dressed in a Chicago White Sox home uniform whereas Cunningham is dressed in a St. Louis Cardinals road uniform. The caption on the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "Joe Cunningham, of St. Louis Cardinals, is forced out at second base in the first inning of the Cardinals game with the Chicago White Sox here March 14th. Nellie Fox, of the White Sox, throws to first base to complete a double play. The White Sox beat the Cardinals, 8-4, for their third grapefruit league victory." Another caption on the back of the photograph (also not shown) states, "Nellie Fox was the premier second baseman of his day (1947-1965). Blessed with talented shortstops as partners Fox was particularly adept at turning a double play. In this 1960 Grapefruit League photo Nellie erases Joe Cunningham of the St. Louis Cardinals and relays to first base. The glove you see in the photo is the one in the display case." Based on the caption and Fox's time with the White Sox, this photograph was taken on March 14, 1960.
