DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Grover Cleveland Alexander. Shown from the chest up, Alexander wears a St. Louis Cardinals road jersey and cap. He looks forward to the camera establishing eye contact. Based on the design of the uniform worn by Alexander, this photograph was probably taken in 1929. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), a caption reads, "TIES RECORD GROVER CLEVELAND ALEXANDER, 42 YEAR OLD VETERAN ST. LOUIS CARDINAL, HAS WON 372 GAMES, TYING THE RECORD OF THE LATE CHRISTY MATHEWSON BY PITCHING ONE MORE WINNING GAME, 'OLD PETE' WILL GAIN SOLE POSSESSION OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE RECORD FOR MOST GAMES WON BY ANY PITCHER. WALTER JOHNSON IN 21 SEASONS WITH THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHALKED 416 VICTORIES,AND IF ALEXANDER CAN MAKE THE GRADE FOR THREE MORE SEASONS HE WILL DOUBTLESS SURPASS JOHNSON'S MARK. 8-6-29."
