Bob Feller and Frank Pytlak photograph
Date1937 April 24
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Bob Feller wearing a Cleveland Indians home jersey engaged in conversation with catcher Frank Pytlak. Both men are shown from the hips up. Feller stands facing the camera with both hands on his hips whereas Pylak has his left side turned towards the camera leaning in to talk to Feller. Feller smiles slightly and looks down while Pylak looks directly at Feller. Due to the lack of eye contact with the camera it is likely that both men were unaware of the presence of the photographer. The markings in the top two corners as well as the portions of the background that are painted a darker color are not original and and indicate edits made before publication. On the reverse (not shown) is a pasted caption that reads, "BOB FELLER, LEFT, CLEVELAND INDIAN PITCHER, PICTURED WITH HIS BATTERY MATE, FRANK PYTLAK, CATCHER, BEFORE THE GAME WITH THE ST. LOUIS BROWNS AT CLEVELAND, O., APRIL 24TH. THE BROWNS WON 4-3. 4/24/37 NY." A second pasted caption (not shown), typed in black ink on the reverse reads, "HIS BATTERY MATE: Bobby Feller and catcher Frankie Pytlak seem in argument on mound strategy. Pytlak caught Bob's record-breaking 18 strikeout (...) Detroit Tigers on Oct? 2, 1938." On the reverse (not shown) there is also a series of stamps. The presence of multiple stamps and captions indicate that this photo was used numerous times for various events.
