Tris Speaker Batting photograph

Date1927 March 04
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Tris Speaker batting. Speaker, facing the camera, wears a Washington Senators Spring training uniform. Depicted in his follow through position, Speaker supports his weight between his bent, front right leg and his straight, back left leg. Only the toe of his left cleat touches the ground. Following the momentum of his swing, Speaker rotates his upper body to his right. Placing left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Speaker holds the bat, angled backwards, chest height on his right side. Speaker looks forward to a point in the distance and to the left of the camera. Captured on the field, an unoccupied stadium can be seen in the background. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a caption, typed in black ink, that reads, "TRIS SPEAKER MAKES DEBUT IN SENATOR'S GARB! TRIS SPEAKER, FORMER MANAGER OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, MADE HIS FIRST APPEARANCE IN THE UNIFORM OF THE WASHINGTON SENATORS, THE TEAM WITH WHICH HE WILL PLAY THIS COMING SEASON AS AN OUTFIELDER, AT THEIR SPRING TRAINING CAMP AT TAMPA, FLA. HE IS SHOWN ABOVE AS HE APPEARED ON THE FIELD. ( B NY 3-4-27)." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the phrase, "RECEIVED MAR 1927."
