Honus Wagner Statue Unveiling photograph

Date1955 April 30
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Honus Wagner at the unveiling of his statue on April 30, 1955. Wagner is seated in a convertible that is parked in front of the stage. Wagner is looking down towards the steering wheel of the vehicle. Multiple men and women stand on stage. In the background is Wagner's statue, which is of Wagner dressed in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform holding a bat. The caption on the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "Hometown baseball fans pay tribute April 30th to their greatest diamond hero..Honus Wagner (foreground, in car), by dedicating a statue depicting the famed 'Flying Dutchman' in his curious bow-legged batting stance. Wagner, 81, was not strong enough to climb to the speaker's platform, but watched from the car as a granddaughter unveiled the 40-ton, 18-foot-high bronze statue before a thousand persons. Left to right, standing, are: Fred Clarke; George Gibson; Williams Benswanger; the Rev. N.R.H. Moor; Mrs. Benswanger; baseball commissioner Ford Frick; National League President Warren Giles; Benjamin Fairless; and Pittsburgh Pirates President John Galbreath. The statue, financed by Wagner fans who sent money from all parts of the country, was erected in Schenley Park, just behind the left field wall at Forbes Field. 4/30/55."
