Cochrane and Grove are dressed in the Philadelphia Athletics home uniform. A newspaper clipping that is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) states, "The veteran manager with one of his greatest batteries - catcher Mickey Cochrane (left) and Lefty Grove. The time - the 1931 World Series when the Athletics, who had won the world's championship in 1929 and 1930, bowed to the famed St. Louis Cardinal Gashouse gang." An additional clipping, also on the reverse (not shown), states, "Mainstays of Philadelphia Athletics Connie Mack (center), manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, with two of his individual stars, Mickey Cochrane (left), catcher, and Robert (Lefty) Grove, pitcher, who will attempt to defend the club's championship title against the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1931 World Series.9/25/31." A clipping affixed to the back to an additional copy of this photograph (not shown) states, "Days of Glory: Catcher Mickey Cochrane (left), Connie Mack, and Lefty Grove has reason to smile in 1930. Mack's Athletics won their World Series, whipping the Cardinals, four games to two. Groove won two games, the opener by 5-2 and the fifth with a three hit, 2-0 job." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on September 25, 1931.
