Sandy Koufax Running photograph

Date1963 October 02
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax. Koufax in running off the pitcher's mound and smiling. The caption on the left side of the photograph reads, "Yankee Stadium, N.Y., Oct. 2 - Sandy's Elated - An elated Sandy Koufax laughs as he charges off mound following the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 win over the New York Yankees in the first World Series game at Yankee Stadium today. Sandy had just struck out pinch hitter Harry Bright of the Yankees for his 15th strikeout in the game, a new World Series record." There is also a caption on the reverse (not shown) which reads, "Hero Koufax: 15 Strikeouts. Los Angeles pitcher Sandy Koufax charges happily off the mound after beating the Yankees, 5-2, in the first game of the 1963 World Series yesterday. At 1:03 pm Whitey Ford, of Lake Success, N.Y., came up on his toes and threw a baseball past Maury Wills, of Veradale, Wash., and Los Angeles, Calif. The 60th competition for the pitch-catch championship of creation was on. At 1:17 p.m. a run for the Dodgers went up on the scoreboard. Up spake a sunkist, not altogether unbiased visitor to Yankee Stadium who passed the summer watching Sandy Koufax win 25 games, 11 by shutout pitching. "Good game, wasn't it?" quoth he. Before the third inning was over the Dodgers had five runs, the Yankees none. The man from California was appalled. "Koufax never had a 5-0 lead against the Mets," he said. "He won't know what to do with it."" According to the caption, this photograph was taken on October 2, 1963.
