DescriptionA black-and-white, head-and-shoulders photograph of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax. Koufax is wearing his Dodgers uniform, jacket, and hat, and is smiling and looking to the side of the camera. The caption at the bottom of the photograph reads, "Los Angeles, June 23 -- Record Setter -- Pitcher Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers wore this smile last night after striking out 16 Philadelphia Phillie batters to set a new major league night game strikeout record. Sandy came within one of tying Dizzy Dean's National League strikeout record. Behind the superb pitching of southpaw Koufax, the Dodgers won the game 6 to 2. 1959." Another caption on the reverse reads, "Cheerful Striker-Out -- Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers photographed after he had fanned 16 Phillies Monday night in a game Los Angeles won, 6-2." According to the caption, this photograph was taken on June 23, 1959.
