DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax captured with a beaming smile on his face after the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on August 31, 1959. On this night, Koufax set a National League record by striking out 18 players in a single game. Koufax is dressed in the Los Angeles Dodgers home uniform and is wearing a Dodgers jacket on top of his uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "Sandy Koufax (above) pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers to within one game of the Giants when the Los Angeles defeated San Francisco 5-2 here tonight. Koufax equaled the strikeout mark for a nine inning game with 18 to match the mark set by Bob Feller in 1938." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Sandy Koufax, Dodger pitcher, owns the National League single game strikeout record of 18 after whiffing that many Giants last night in L.A. With Bob Feller he owns a major piece of the majors' mark, too." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on August 31, 1959.
