Sandy Koufax photograph

Date1965 April 03
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax captured looking straight ahead with a serious expression on his face after being seen by the doctor for his left elbow. Koufax is dressed in casual clothing. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph on the side and states, "Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax is shown here 4/3 at the office of Dr. Robert Kerlan. Koufax has an arthritic condition in his left elbow which probably will prevent him from pitching opening day and may sharply limit his playing future. Dr. Kerlan, who examined Koufax late 4/1 after the super star came here from the Dodgers' Florida training camp, said 4/2 Koufax's condition has been 'gradually developing.'" A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "Injury-plagued Sandy Koufax was back on the disabled roll yesterday and there was no way to tell when the Los Angeles Dodgers' pitching star would be ready to return to action. 'Sandy is suffering from a traumatic arthritic condition of his left elbow which tends to flare up under constant stress,' said the team physician, Dr. Kerlan, after examining the stiff and swollen elbow. Koufax's chances of pitching the opening game against the Mets in New York on April 12 appear dim. 'Sandy will remain here three to four days,' Dr. Kerlan said. 'It is too early to tell what the results of the treatment will be, and it is also too early to tell when he will pitch again.'" Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on April 03, 1965.
