Sandy Koufax photograph

Date1962 August 24
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax captured seated holding up his injured index finger on his left hand. Koufax has a solemn expression on his face. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "The Los Angeles Dodgers southpaw, Sandy Koufax, looks glum as he displays his injured finger in his Hotel Roosevelt room August 24th. Koufax has been out of action since July 17th because of a blood clot in an artery in the palm of his throwing hand." Another newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "A fellow from Los Angeles was saying that Sandy Koufax appears not to be concentrating on strike-outs this season, an assumption based upon the fact that the talented Dodger lefthander whiffed fewer hitters up to the All-Star break that he did last year. Then you look at the record and see that Sandy already has fanned 150, a figure that leads both leagues. Projecting that performance for the first half of the season through September, he would easily top the total of 269 he racked up in 1961 to break the 58-year-old National League record of Christy Mathewson." Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on August 24, 1962.
