Ty Cobb Honey Boy Evans trophy

Date1911
DescriptionLarge silver plated trophy with a fluted column sitting on a three-tiered base. There are two vertical baseball bats on either side of the fluted column and an eagle with outstretched wings sitting atop a baseball in the front on the base. "Won By Ty Cobb" is inscribed on the top of the base on either side of the eagle and baseball. The baseball has "Detroit AL / Per .417" inscribed on the front. Above the fluted column is a circular upper section with small columns running around the perimeter with inscribed and raised floral detailing. There is an oval framed portrait photo of George Evans on the front. The frame consists of laurel leaves with a harp and theater masks below. Top portion of this upper section has embossed lettering, "George "Honey Boy" Evans / Trophy / For The / World's Champion Batsman / National and American League / Season 1911." This portion with lettering tapers to a smaller circular base where a brass plated female figurine in flowing gown stands holding a laurel leaf above her head in both hands. Back side of the base has "Dieges & Clust, NY" inscribed near the edge.
Bio/Historical NoteTy Cobb earned this Honey Boy Evans Trophy in 1911 with a remarkable .420 batting average. He also led the league in runs, hits, total bases, stolen bases, doubles and triples, and drove in more runs than any other player, as well. Awarded from 1908 through 1912, the George "Honey Boy" Evans trophies were individually designed, executed and given to the "World's Championship Batsman," or that player with the highest batting average in all of major league baseball. The trophies were presented by George Evans, one of the most famous vaudeville actors and overall entertainers of his time, and a tremendous fan of the game.
