Sandy Koufax Pitching photograph

Date1963 September 17
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Los Angeles Dodgers' pitcher, Sandy Koufax captured after releasing his pitch during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on September 17, 1963. During this game the Dodgers beat the Cardinals 4-0. Koufax has a look of concentration on his face as he watches the baseball. Koufax has his left arm out in front of him and his baseball mitt against his right side. His right left is straight out in front of him and his left leg is bent behind him. He is dressed in the Los Angeles Dodgers road uniform. Sportsman's Park is visible in the background. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the side of the front of the photograph and states, "Dodger ace, Sandy Koufax, leading National League pitcher, shows his form as he pitches flawlessly in Dodger-Cards game here 9/17." A newspaper clipping is also affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "It's difficult to conjure up mental images of Sandy Koufax as a killer. He is a placid man, swarthily handsome and quick to smile. But he's a killer. He's a knockout puncher in the Sonny Liston tradition and last night he put the slug on the Cardinals But good. He knocked them out of the pennant race as surely as if he has broken all their bats or stolen all their gloves or kidnapped Stan Musial, Ken Boyer or Bill White. This was the must watch game for the Cardinals and it's tough apples when you come up to the game you have to win and the guy you have beat is the best pitcher in the...if Koufax were sound last year. It's not so much that Koufax won, but how he won, with a 4-0 four-hitter after holding Cards hitless for six innings. It was as thorough a job as the Valentine's Day massacre. Now Dodgers are secure in knowledge that even if Bob Gibson beats Pete Richert tonight, they will still be three games up on the losing side. It wasn't Sandy's best game by far. He struck out only four and there have been two no-hitters that rate ahead of this one..." Based on the newspaper clippings this photograph was taken on September 17, 1963.
