DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax captured looking straight ahead with a small smile on his face. Koufax is dressed in the Los Angeles Dodgers home uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "The Los Angeles Herald-Examiner says southpaw Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers will announce his retirement from baseball 11/18. The newspaper's sports editor quoted Dodger General Manager Buzzie Bavasi as saying Koufax called him 11/17 to tell him of the decision. Koufax (seen in '66 filer) has been troubled with arthritic pains in his pitching arm." Koufax voluntarily retired after only twelve seasons in the major leagues and with the Dodgers to avoid permanent damage to his arm. Based on the newspaper clipping, Koufax's uniform and his time with the Dodgers this photograph was taken in 1966.
