Jimmie Foxx Batting photograph

Date1929 or 1930
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length posed photograph of Jimmie Foxx batting. Foxx, shown in 3/4 profile, wears a Philadelphia Athletics road uniform. Depicted entering into his follow through position, Foxx stands on his left leg, extending his right leg back behind his body, with only the toe of his cleat resting on the ground. Leaning slightly forward, Foxx rotates his upper body to his left, following the momentum of his swing. In gripping the bat, Foxx places right hand over left, holding the bat waist height on his left side. Foxx looks forward, to a point in the distance and to the right of the camera. The blurred outline of the bat held by Foxx indicates that this image was captured mid-swing. Visible in the background of the photograph are two other Athletics players as well as a partially occupied stadium. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Foxx, this image was captured during the 1929 or 1930 season, the only two years, during which Foxx played, that Philadelphia wore uniforms socks with three stripes. Handwritten on the reverse (not shown), in pencil, is the word "Greene," possibly indicating the name of the photographer, William C. Greene.
