Date1926
DescriptionSmall circular silver medal in a square, black cardboard box with sea green velvet lining. The medal has the image of two men standing in front of Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The men are striding towards each other, shaking hands. One man is holding a small figure of Nike, Greek goddess of victory, and the other has a shoulder on the man's shoulder. Around the edge of the medal reads "Sesquicentennial / Sports Medal / Philadelphia 1926." The reverse reads "Pennsylvania RR Championships" around the top edge of the medal with a logo for the company underneath. Inscribed in the bottom is "Sept. 18, 1926 / Baseball / Runners Up." Inside the lid of the box is manufacturer info, though it has been rubbed illegible. On the bottom of the base of the box is a red label sticker that says "Baseball Runner Up."
Bio/Historical NoteThe Pennsylvania Railroad held a company-wide baseball tournament as part of the 1926 Philadelphia World's Fair. Members of the runner-up team from Altoona, Pennsylvania, including the donor's grandfather, received these silver medals.
