DescriptionA black-and-white portrait photograph of Bob Feller in a winter uniform while stationed on the U.S.S. Alabama. Feller is wearing a domed helmet that reads, "10TH DIV." Feller is positioned facing front, making eye contact with the camera. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in blue ink, is the caption that reads, "FELLER PITCHING BULLETS NOT BASEBALLS BOB FELLER, ABOVE, ONE OF THE GREATEST BASEBALL PITCHERS OF HIS ERA, IS ALL SET TODO A DIFFEREN(...) KIND OF PITCHING THESE DAYS. AS CHIEF SPECIAL-IST, HE IS ALL SET TO DO A DIFFERENT KIND OF PITCHING THESE DAYS. AS A CHIEF SPECIALIST, HE IS THE CAPTAIN OF A 40 MM. GUN CREW ABOARD ONE OF UNCLE SAM'S NEW BATTLESHIPS. THE FORMER AMERIC(...) LEAGUER JOINED THE U.S. NAVY AS A PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR AND LATER APPLIED FOR GUNNERY SCHOOL. SUBSEQUENTLY, HE WAS ASSIGNED TO SEA DUTY AND HERE HE IS-BESIDE HIS GUN ON A COLD WINTER DAY 3/5/43." Stamped on the reverse in red ink is the date "MAR 1943," the probable publication date of this image.
