Dan Brouthers Portrait photograph

Date1882
DescriptionA full-length black-and-white portrait photograph of Dan Brouthers standing in uniform, holding a baseball bat. Brouthers, shown in 3/4 profile, wears white uniform pants and a striped jersey and baseball cap. Standing with feet apart, Brouthers looks forward over his front right shoulder, directing his gaze to a point to the right of the camera. Placing left hand over right on the grip of the bat, Brouthers holds the bat in front of his body, waist height. Resting the bat against his stomach, Brouthers holds the bat perpendicular to the ground. The painted background of the photograph indicates both the time period during which this image was captured, late 19th century, and the setting, a professional photography studio. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Brouthers, this image was taken during 1882. For this year baseball clubs wore specific uniforms that denoted each player's position, first basemen wore scarlet and white striped uniforms. The markings below Brouthers' feet, seen on the surface of the photograph, are not original and indicate where the image is to be cropped. A caption below the photograph (not shown), typed in black ink, reads, "DETROIT "86 BOSTON "89 SPRINGFIELD "96 " "97."
