Jimmie Foxx Crossing Home Plate photograph

Date1938
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Jimmie Foxx crossing home plate. Foxx, shown in profile, wears a Boston Red Sox home uniform. Captured mid-step, Foxx stands with his left foot on home plate, while his right leg, that is bent at the knee, extends backwards. While holding both hands waist height, with arms bent, Foxx looks forward and down. To Foxx's right stands teammate Joe Cronin, wearing the number four, holding two bats in front of his body, chest height, and to his left, Boston's catcher. Behind these three players is an umpire, wearing protective gear, and a rogue spectator, running towards Foxx brandishing a flask. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a newspaper clipping of this published photograph with the following caption, "You Earned Drink, Jimmy When Jimmy Foxx clouted his second home run of the day with two on in the seventh inning to put the Red Sox ahead of the Indians yesterday one of the boys in the grandstand allowed his enthusiasm to get the best of him. Here you see Foxx crossing the plate, with the gleeful customer rushing out to offer him a drink of something that doesn't look like soda pop. The Red Sox won by 7-6." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, is the phrase, "LAST TIME USED JUN 9 1938 EDITION 5."
