Duffy Lewis, Tris Speaker, and Harry Hooper photograph
Date1930 September 08
DescriptionA black-and-white, full-length posed portrait photograph of Duffy Lewis, Tris Speaker, and Harry Hooper standing in uniform, leaning against the infield fence at Braves Field, Boston, MA. Duffy Lewis, pictured far left, is shown leaning with feet hip-width apart, both arms resting down by his sides, wearing a baseball glove on his right hand. Lewis, wearing an unaffiliated pinstriped uniform looks directly at the camera, establishing eye contact. Speaker, shown between Lewis and Hooper, leans against the fence with his right arm around Lewis' shoulders and his left around Hooper's. Speaker, wearing an unaffiliated plain flannel jersey and pinstriped pants, smiles while looking down and to the right of the camera. Speaker, wearing a glove on his right hand, crosses at the ankle his left leg over his right, using his back right leg to support the majority of his weight. Hooper, standing far right, holds in his right hand, that is extended down by his side, a glove. Wearing a Buffalo flannel jersey and pinstriped pants, Hooper hooks his his left thumb into his belt, looking directly at the camera, establishing eye contact. All three former players wear the same striped socks and long sleeve shirt under their flannel jersey, an indication of the time of year that this photograph was taken. Evident by the occupied stadium visible in the background this photograph was taken just before the start of the Old-Timers Game at Braves Field on September 08, 1930. Lewis, Speaker, and Hooper all participated in this game between former players of both Boston teams. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in purple ink, is a caption that reads, "SPEAKER AND FORMER TEAMMATES HUBBARD, TEXAS: TRIS SPEAKER, THE GRAY EAGLE OF THE OLD BOSTON RED SOX AND HALL OF FAMER, DIED DEC. 8TH WHILE ON A FISHING TRIP NEAR HERE. SEVENTY-YEAR-OLD SPEAKER, REGARDED AS ONE OF BASEBALL'S GREAT DEFENSIVE CENTER FIELDERS, APPARENTLY SUCCUMBED TO A HEART ATTACK. SPEAKER (CENTER) IS SHOWN HERE WITH HIS FORMER BOSTON TEAMMATES, OUTFIELDERS DUFFY LEWIS (LEFT) AND HARRY HOOPER, DURING A REUNION IN 1930. 12/8/58 AAD." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in red ink, is the date "FEB 24 1959," indication the multiple publication dates of this image. Stamped as well on the reverse (not shown), in black ink, are the phrases, "SPEAKER, TRIS BASEBALL," and "/DEAD/." The provided caption indicates that this photograph was published to commemorate Speaker's passing, rather than as a record of the 1930 game. The caption on a similar photograph reads, "A caption, typed in black ink, to the right of the photograph (not shown) reads, "NXP13466-12/8/58-HUBBARD,TEXAS: Tris Speaker, the Gray Eagle of the old Boston Red Sox and Hall of Famer, died 12/8 while on a fishing trip near here. Seventy-year-old Speaker, regarded as one of baseball's greatest defensive center fielders, apparently succumbed to a heart attack. Speaker (center) is shown here with his former Boston teammates, outfielders Duffy Lewis (L) and Harry Hooper, during a reunion in Boston in 1930.."
