Date1954 July 08
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph, from left to right, of Joe Clark, Bob Carpenter and Connie Mack captured having a discussion about the Philadelphia Athletics. Clark is looking at a pamphlet. Carpenter is looking towards Clark and has a smile on his face. Mack is looking over the pamphlet as well and appears to be in mid-sentence. The three gentlemen are dressed in suits. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph (not shown) (not shown) and states, "Philly Fights to Keep A's Philadelphia: Left to right, Philadelphia Mayor Joseph Clark talks with Philadelphia Athletics owner Bob Carpenter and A's President Connie Mack about financial problems facing the club. The trio discussed the problem prior to a meeting of 75 businessmen called by Mayor Clark, July 8th, in an effort to keep the A's in Philly. The A's have been under pressure to sell, and observers have connected the move with a drive by Dallas, Texas, citizens to bring Major League Baseball to that city.7/8/54" Based on the caption this photograph was taken on July 8, 1954. The following year the Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics.
