Sandy Koufax photograph
Date1960 May 23
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Sandy Koufax captured in the locker room looking down with a bright smile at a baseball he is holding in his hand after claiming the win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0, on May 23, 1960. Koufax is dressed in Los Angeles Dodgers road uniform and has a Dodgers jacket over his uniform. A newspaper clipping is affixed to the front of the photograph and states, "Los Angeles pitcher Sandy Koufax beams in the dressing room after throwing a one-hitter against the league-leading Pittsburgh Pirates here 5/23. The Dodger left hander struck out 10 winning 1-0." A newspaper clipping is affixed to the back of the photograph and states, "He won, didn't he? Why is Dodger Sandy Koufax smiling when he missed the Hall of Fame last night by allowing one hit? Because the 1-0 victory in Pittsburgh over the Pirates was Sandy's first of the season after four losses." Koufax was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 when he was 36, making him the youngest player elected in. Based on the newspaper clipping this photograph was taken on May 23, 1960.
