Mike Donlin New York Evening Journal trophy

DescriptionLarge silver cup trophy supported on three crossed silver bats on a circular silver base with a silver baseball in the center of the crossed bats. Platform has a carved scroll and leaf design around the perimeter edge. Cup has two elaborately shaped and curved handles. Top of the cup has a carved leaf design around the edge. Front is engraved "New York Evening Journal / Trophy / to the / Most Popular Base Ball Player / of / Greater New York / 1908." Reverse is engraved "Won By / Mike Donlin."

Bio/Historical NoteTrophy awarded to Mike Donlin by the New York Evening Journal for winning a contest as the Giants' most popular player in 1908. The silver loving cup was presented to Donlin between games of a Giants-Reds doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, September 26, 1908, just five days after the famous "Merkle's Boner" game of September 23, 1908.
