Bob Feller and Family at Home photograph
Date1951 August 09
DescriptionA black-and-white photograph of Bob Feller at home with his wife Virginia and two of his three sons. Feller tries to obtain the attention of his youngest son Bruce with the toy held in his right hand. Feller rests his right hand on the highchair and smiles looking down at his son. Virginia sits opposite her husband, her gaze is directed towards Feller, watching him play with their son. Martin, his second oldest son, wears a Cleveland Indians shirt and peers down over the back of the highchair. Based on the background of the photo as well as the elements on the table in front of the Fellers one can discern that this photo was taken in their family kitchen during breakfast. The background between both Feller and Virginia has been whitewashed and is not original to the photo. The black marks above the heads of the figures indicate where the photo is to be cropped upon publication. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in purple ink, is a caption that reads, "FAMILY MAN GATES MILLS, OHIO. BOB FELLER OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, WHO IN 1936 WAS THE 17-YEAR-OLD BOY WONDER OF THE MAJOR LEAGUES, HAS GROWN UP IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. NOW USING CRAFT INSTEAD OF THE BLAZING FAST BALL OF HIS YOUTH, THE 32-YEAR-OLD PITCHER IS ENJOYING ONE OF THE BEST SEASONS OF HIS COLORFUL CAREER. AS A FAMILY MAN HE RATES HIGH TOO. FELLER IS THE PROUD FATHER OF TWO SONS AND SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME AT HOME WHEN THE CLUB IS NOT ON THE ROAD. CL976365 . NEW YORK BUREAU FELLER, WHO USES HIS PRIVATE PLANE TO FLY TO AND FROM CLEVELAND STADIUM FOR THE HOME GAMES, HAS PLENTY OF TIME FOR BREAKFAST WITH THE FAMILY. BABY BRUCE IS THE CENTER OF ATTENTION AS HIS BROTHER, MARTY, AND MOTHER, VIRGINIA, LOOK ON. CREDIT (ACME PHOTO BY FRANK REED, STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER) 8-9-51 (SA) NY-1-2-3-4." Stamped on the reverse (not shown) in black ink is "LAST TIME USED AUG 11 1951 1st EDITION," the probable publication date of this image.
