Tris Speaker with Dick Donovan and Walter Streuli, 1954 March 04 photograph

Date1954 March 04
DescriptionA black-and-white 3/4 length photograph of Tris Speaker giving batting advice to Detroit players Dick Donovan and Walter Streuli. Speaker, shown in profile, pictured far right, wears a suit and fedora. Speaker, with both hands, holds a baseball bat out in front of his body, in the process of demonstrating the proper grip to the players. In holding the bat, Speaker grips the knob of the bat with his back right hand, keeping his right arm close by his side. Speaker extends his front left arm to grip the handle of the bat, while looking forward, making eye contact with Donovan. Streuli, shown in 3/4 profile, stands between Donovan and Speaker, wearing a nylon jacket under a Detroit Tigers road uniform. Streuli, receiving instruction from Speaker, extends both arms out in front of his body, slightly below chest height, to grip the same bat. Speaker places his hands over Streuli's to help demonstrate the appropriate grip. Streuli looks to a point to the left of the camera, out of the corner of his eyes. Donovan, pictured far right, also shown in 3/4 profile, wears a long sleeve shirt underneath his Detroit Tigers road uniform. Donovan, standing with his hands on his hips during this instruction, looks straight ahead, establishing eye contact with Speaker. Pasted on the reverse (not shown), typed in purple ink, is a caption that reads, " 105. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . NEW YORK BUREAU - - -AND BATTERYMATES, LEND ME YOUR EARS! LAKELAND, FLA.: ONE OF BASEBALL'S IMMORTALS, TRIS SPEAKER (RIGHT), FORMER "GRAY EAGLE" OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, GIVES BATTING TIPS TO DETROIT ROOKIES WHILE VISITING THE TIGER TRAINING CAMP IN LAKELAND, FLORIDA. PITCHER DICK DONOVAN (LEFT), OF QUINCY, MASS., WHO HAD AN 11-WON, EIGHT-LOST RECORD WITH THE ATLANTA CRACKERS LAST YEAR, LISTENS TO TRIS ALONG WITH CATCHER WALTER STREULI, A MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, LAD WHO PLAYED WITH MONTGOMERY IN 1953. 3/4/54 (JUL)." Stamped on the reverse (not shown) as well, in pink ink, is the date "MAR 8 1954," the probable publication date of this image.
