DescriptionA black-and-white full-length posed photograph of Burleigh Grimes pitching. Grimes, facing the camera, wears a St. Louis Cardinals uniform. Having just hurled the ball, Grimes supports his weight between his bent, front left leg and his straight, back right leg. Only the toe of his right cleat touches the ground. Leaning forward, Grimes rests his right arm in front of his body while holding his gloved left hand along his left side. Grimes looks forward, establishing eye contact with the camera. Captured on the field, another figure can be seen in the background. Based on the specific design of the uniform worn by Grimes, this image was taken during 1930, his first year with the team, or 1931. During these two years St. Louis wore socks with five stripes, two large and three small. For the 1932 season Grimes played with the Chicago Cubs. Pasted on the reverse (not shown) is a portion of a newspaper clipping referencing Grimes. Stamped on this caption, on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "JUL 15 19--." Stamped as well on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the date, "OCT 4 1932." An additional copy of this photograph exists.
