Tris Speaker Sliding photograph

Date1926 March 25
DescriptionA black-and-white full-length action photograph of Tris Speaker sliding into third base. Speaker, right, captured mid-slide, wears a Cleveland Indians road uniform. Speaker, bracing himself with his left hand, that is on the ground, slides on his left knee. Speaker extends his straight, right leg in front of his body, over-top his left leg. Speaker looks down and to his right, in the direction of the base. Speaker's right hand rests in the air, bent at the elbow, shoulder height. Left, third baseman Heinie Groh lays on his left side, in front of the base, blocking Speaker's path. Portions of the background have been modified for publication. The perpendicular lines drawn on the surface of the image are not original and indicate where the photograph is to be cropped upon publication. Based on the included background of this photograph, the lack of advertisements on the outfield wall, and the scale of the field, this image was captured at an amateur baseball field rather than at a professional stadium. Handwritten in the right center of the photograph, in black, is the phrase, "same size." Pasted on the reverse (not shown), is a newspaper clipping of the published caption that accompanied this photograph. It reads, "TRIS SPEAKER OUT AT THIRD Heinie Groh of the Giants is shown blocking third base and putting Tris Speaker of Cleveland Indians out in fast play during recent Giants-Indians game at Lakeland, Fla., which latter one, 9 to 3." Stamped on the reverse (not shown), in purple ink, is the phrase, "FILED MAR 25 1926."
